It is the attacks from within that I fear most, for no one can succeed in conquering America unless a critical mass of Americans acquiesces to the corroding notions of the Left and the unholy alliance they seem to have forged, this time, with the Islamo-Fascist element.
The anniversary of the September 11th attacks on our homeland prompts a myriad of vivid emotions and sentiments to rise up in just about all of us. 9-11 has rightfully become a day of mourning, remembrance and resolve for most Americans. The lessons imparted to America that day transgressed our misplaced naiveté and effectively rewired the personal and collective consciousness of our society at nearly every tier. And for a time it appeared as though we had become a nation firmly welded together by this event that had caused many of us to internalize, once again, the binding principles that make us uniquely American. It is this aspect of that day, and that time in U.S. history, that I choose to give prominence in my mind and indeed celebrate.
For me, September 11th had always been a day of routine celebration as it also happens to be the day back in 1965 that I was born. And now, in many respects it is also the day back in 2001, that I and many other Americans were reborn.
It is fair to say that America’s purpose and mission in this world had for some remained dormant in a sea of apathy and ambivalence. The sleeping giant, though, was awakened to the strength of her ideals along with an awareness of the need to tirelessly defend them or perish. And for a while anyway, ambivalence was put down; down, but sadly not out. Freedom and individual liberty continue to be aggressively under attack from both outside and from within the United States. However, it is the attacks from within that I fear most, for no one can succeed in conquering America unless a critical mass of Americans acquiesces to the corroding notions of the left and the unholy alliance they seem to have forged, this time, with the Islamo-Fascist element.
These attacks take the form of questioning the legitimacy of the war on terror, promotion of spurious conspiracy theories and relativist notions of our American way of life. All of these are designed to debase the cohesive principles and common sense realities that tie us together as a nation, and that are so critical during this time of war. Division creates political opportunity and no one group is more willing to exploit this fact than the left, even if this exploitation is counter to American interests and jeopardizes lives. 9-11 unites us and for this reason the party of the left doesn’t truly want you to remember it.
This explains why, during this bitter political season, the DNC and their allies had sought to prevent the Bush Campaign from referencing the events of September 11th. It is a request tantamount to Roosevelt being asked not to discuss the attack on Pearl Harbor, or suggesting that Reagan not be permitted to address the Cold War … it is absurd at its base. The fact persists that the anniversary of the attacks is also a recurring refutation of leftist positions on national defense. It plainly punctuates the wrong headed policies they have proffered throughout history when America was tasked with responding to similar threats to her existence. And the Democrats' fears so far appear to be born out. According to an ABC/Washington Post Poll conducted between September 6th and September 8th, President Bush receives superior marks to those of John Kerry in every category, with the highest marks being received on the issue of who people trust to best handle the campaign on terrorism. Cleary, a majority of those polled had been reminded of the struggle for freedom that is manifested in this war, and began to unite again it its purpose and embrace the candidate they feel best represents this same conviction.
September 11th is without question equal in significance in the annals American history as Independence Day, Korea, Vietnam, WWI, WWII, and the Cold War. The culmination of all these instances where America remained resolute was the liberation of millions of people. Where America lost her conviction, millions were thrust into death, poverty and tyranny. Yet the liberal western elites still don’t get it. Passivity, appeasement, indefinite token acts of diplomacy and divisive politics are the liberal policies of failure and weakness. And they continue to jeopardize our existence as surely as does any terrorist state or group hell bent on detonating a dirty bomb in our cities; in reality, the former enables the latter.
It is my prayer that we will not again be lulled into the deadly abyss of ambivalence and apathy promulgated by revisionist historical recollections or forced amnesia from the left … but rather, that we remember that day for what it was…an attack on our very way of life, and then celebrate the blessings of liberty for ourselves and re-commit to defending them for our posterity.
