As Paul Williams makes clear in his recent book, either the mujahadeen will destroy us or we will destroy them.

AND GOD WILL PROCLAIM PARADISE AND OUR SHEIKH WILL TAKE THE ISLAMIC ARMY IN HIS BOSOM AND ITS FLAG SHALL FLY EVERYWHERE IN THE WORLD. WE ARE WAITING.
– Abu al Bara’a al-Qarshy, one of Osama bin Laden’s most trusted lieutenants, February 12, 2003.

For reasons not quite clear to me I have taken to reading apocalyptic literature, including the work of the gifted Canadian writer, Michael O’Brien, particularly his novel, Father Elijah. However, when Prometheus Books was kind enough to forward Paul L. Williams’ latest, The Al Qaeda Connection, I took a short break from the fictional world of Swiftcreek and the delightful Delaney clan in order to spend a few days with the indefatigable Mr. Williams.

Interestingly enough, I had no sooner finished his alarming and disturbing book when, seemingly out of the blue, President Bush gave his recent speech warning of the threat posed by Al Qaeda. It’s been a while since a specific Al Qaeda warning originated from the presidential podium and one tends to shudder when any number of high government officials goes on the record to say that it’s just a matter of time before these Islamic terrorists strike again. Which begs the question: Do they know something they’re not telling us?

I might add that I have an overwhelming “feeling” that our preparations for these future events are less than adequate: our borders remain porous, a significant number of American Muslim clerics continue to advocate violence against their fellow citizens without fear of reprisal, and, as Mr. Williams reports, Al Qaeda may already have nukes and sleeper cells in place.

Williams tells us that Osama bin Laden is calling for the death of four million Americans (two million of which must be children!) in reprisal for alleged “wrongs” committed by the American government; to wit: the occupation of Saudi Arabia (the land of the two holy places), the support of Israel, the first Persian Gulf War and the economic sanctions that followed, and “the invasions of Somalia, Afghanistan, and Iraq.” Also, Williams informs his readers that Al Qaeda intends to nuke several U.S. cities (and the port of Valdez, Alaska) simultaneously. Should Al Qaeda be even partially successful America will suffer not only death and injury to thousands of her citizens but also a crippling economic blow much worse than that which resulted from the 9/11 massacre. If bin Laden succeeds the “War on Terror” may be over, America will find herself in reduced circumstances, and the Muslim world will be on the verge of the New Caliphate.

Following the 9/11 massacres the Bush Administration developed the policy of establishing “democracy in the Middle East,” an interesting and noble idea, if not a bit Wilsonian and hubristic. What makes the government believe that a majority of Muslims spend any time praying for a democratic regime? And, we must ask ourselves if we can trust a government whose specious investigation revealed that the perpetrators of the Murrah Federal building bombing (April 19, 1995) were two disgruntled Americans?

It is the Murrah bombing that is the key to any determined American response to Islamic terrorism. Because that event and its aftermath, reveals either an impuissant federal law enforcement bureaucracy or worse, an effort to mislead the American public for political reasons. I would suggest that until former Oklahoma City television journalist, Jayna Davis (and her associate, Chicago attorney, David Schippers), are permitted to reveal to the American congress, in open testimony, her findings related to the Murrah bombing (see Ms. Davis’s book The Third Terrorist) we are allowing American citizens to remain ignorant of one of Islam’s signal victories in its war with the West.

Osama bin Laden has made it very clear the carnage and suffering that awaits our American homeland. Either the mujahadeen, a determined and fanatical foe, will destroy us or we will destroy them, it’s really that simple.

The Al Qaeda Connection is available on Amazon.com.
