Bravo! I had no idea some intellectual (and spiritual) contemporary thought was returning to the concepts of constructive punishment.
I work in a High School and it is painfully obvious which children fit in which of your categories of neglected, abused, or indulged. The normal teen from the previous generations is a rarity. Most fit into one of the other three groups. Parents do not know how to administer judicious punishments. They are too bombarded with psycho-scientific and politically driven drivel. The idea of calmly and rationally administering physical punishment is an alien concept today at best. Part of this is perhaps the impatience of today's parent. They actually expect instantaneous results from whatever concept they are using. Kids are encouraged by teachers and peers to report "abuse". What started as concern for truly abused children has become a Frankenstien monster of PC fear. By the time kids reach High School, many parents seem to be simply worn out by misbehaving and out-of-control kids who never learned self control.
As one parent told me: "We traded self-control for self-esteem, and it was a bad trade".
