By request, here are the top 100 liberal political websites. There were plenty of surprises. Most of the feminist and gay sites didn't make it, nor did Ralph Nader or Code Pink.
Several of you who liked the Top 100 Conservative Political Websites have asked for a compilation of the top liberal sites. Here is that list, with some additional notes about the compilation of it. (For a discussion of the methodology used to compile the lists, please read the description on the conservative list) There were over 2,000 personal blogs listed as uncategorized on alexa.com, which included political blogs mixed in with every other kind of blog, so hopefully I caught most of them, if not please let me know and I'll get them added. Unlike the conservative websites, there were far more newspapers that could arguably be included, so I tried to include at least the biggest ones, if I missed any that clearly should have been included please let me know.
The disappointments? The National Organization of Women wasn't in the top 100, coming in at a low 238,371, and NARAL , Code Pink and Emily's List didn't even come close to making the list. GLAAD was the only major gay site that made it, ironically coming in immediately after NOW at 247,173. The New Republic only came in at 40,077 probably because of its subscription-only service. The Brookings Institute was even further below, at 283,197. For those of us who watch a lot of political talk TV, it shows that organizations like the Brookings Institute which frequently has guests on those shows aren't necessarily very popular on the web. (the correlation there on the right is the Independent Women's Forum , which frequently has its members as guests on political talk shows but they didn't even come close to making the top conservative sites)
I left out some sites that struck me as more close to moderate, such as The Economist (ranked 3,751), The Atlantic Monthly (ranked 11,427), C-span (ranked 58,719) and stateline.org which is part of Pew Charitable Trusts (ranked 277,038). Sites that seemed like generic foreign policy think tanks were left off. I didn't include any of the sites that were too philosophical, like marxists.org (ranked 24,163).
I attempted to keep the total around 100 sites, but with the inevitable oversight of a few sites when I compiled the conservative list last week, another 25 or so popped up. Interestingly, however, by setting the limit at sites rated under 460,000, the number of liberal and conservative websites is about equal. Of course, there are a larger percentage of liberal newspapers, but as newspapers are increasingly moving away from print and going to the web, it all evens out.
