Please tell me what the Carter-Mondale Act of 1974 is. I cannot find any such law.

I'm also not convinced that family law is the main reason for overcrowded prisons. Drug-related offenses form a very high percentage, as well as violent crimes. Sure, solid families help reduce that kind of thing, but there are a few extra links in the causal chain from family problems to crime.

There's a lot of pessimism about the chances for Republicans in the upcoming election on this group. I'm curious - how do people account for that? Eight years of solid Republican control of government, followed by two years of exceedingly weak Democratic 'control' of Congress that's widely regarded as an ineffective opposition (the term "rubber stamp" gets bandied about sometimes). If Republican policies were, in fact, effective... why would so many voters be upset with them?

I'm not sure these issues are of nearly as much concern to voters as you think they are. At least polling doesn't indicate it. I'd hardly blame this issue for the disenfranchisement of Republicans in the 2006, and now 2008 elections. And I really don't see the Republicans getting swept into office with a campaign built on, "Vote Republican and enjoy the freedom of the Chinese!". Forced abortions to facilitate demographic engineering by the government kind of kills the "family friendly" image that conjures up. Kind of like when you praised Islam for its strong anti-feminist stance. Sometimes you CAN get too much of a good thing.
