Sedonaman, unfortunately we have the same type of politicians in office today as we had during the Viet Nam action. In Viet Nam we had unreasonable rules for enemy engagement, cry babies at home reviling the military, and politicians attempting to buy votes...we still have the same issues today. Would I stop my daughters (no sons that I know of) from going into the military? No! Doesn't mean that I am happy with the political environment or the fools that think negotiation is the way to win the savage heart.

I do, however talk to current active Marines between assignment to Iraq or Afghanistan on a monthly or so basis and I am heartened by what they report which conflicts with what I view and read of the news. There is hope, our military are good people, and our politicians trash. Welcome to the 4th world as our politicians open our borders to the uneducated masses.

Even though you recommend your sons avoid the military be sure to get them significant weapons training. My daughters have all gone through the course for concealed carry and are ready to defend themselves when necessary. The civil war in Mexico will soon spill over the border and your sign on name suggests you will be in an almost front row seat to observe the consequence.

As a Vietnam-era vet, I want the answer to one question:

Why should a young person today go in the military, risk his life, and possibly spill his blood to win something the politicians will only give away at the negotiation table?

I would wager that just this one more-likely-than-not outcome has done more to hurt recruiting than anything else, and is the reason I advised my sons to avoid the military if at all possible.

I noted the same issue and posted information on it to the vfw post2573 blog. The school action is both a slap in the face to us (veterans) and a loss of valuable perspective for the students. The fact is that many of the seniors will enlist without the opportunity to have an open frank discussion with men and women that have been there. I was disgusted but our schools tend to disgust me on an almost daily basis.
