Ladies First: Palin Choice Corrects Narrative Of History

In the sweep of history, it’s ladies first when it comes down to which victims should be enfranchised with the presidency of the United States.

In the sweep of history, it’s ladies first when it comes down to which victims should be enfranchised with the presidency of the United States. Blacks come second in the march of time, which is why Billy and Hillary are kicking each other in the rear for not going ahead and snatching the Democrat nomination for the nation’s highest office from Barack Obama in Denver in the wake of Republican candidate John McCain’s choice of female Sarah Palin for his vice-presidential running mate. The misshapen nomination of Obama has fractured the time-line and once again committed the Democrats to a loser. Hillary could beat McCain.

The Palin choice is both brilliant and problematical. The Alaska governor brings spirit and basic Republican principles to the McCain camp – and a big juicy bone for the media to chew on, especially the succulent prime cut that Palin’s 17-year-old daughter is pregnant and currently unmarried. The desperate Democrat-inclined mass media have their teeth locked on the subject with the objective to concoct a scandal where none exists, while creating questions on the competency of McCain officials to vet Palin.

Obama has been advised to take the high road on the teen pregnancy issue but has hardly restrained his camp followers from using the issue to his advantage. The Democrat candidate issued his usual platitudes (family is off-limits in the campaign) but stopped short of commanding his minions to lay off. Poor Juan Williams, a somewhat sensible black media pundit, is the chief messenger for the Obama strategy. Listen carefully for the party line in his carefully crafted utterances: If Palin did not disclose this to McCain (which she allegedly did), then what else is she hiding?

This is an unseemly stance, as if a pregnant daughter ranks up there with Democrat John Edwards and his sexual adventures (and his pathetic effort to use a beard to take the rap for his love child); or with Bill Clinton’s sexual athleticism as a governor and President of the United States. Wait a minute Juan, why are you sacrificing your dignity and credibility to maul a teenage girl to save Obama? But go ahead – attacking a kid in the name of political righteousness will only sink Obama’s ship quicker and deeper.

Sarah Palin is a pistol-packing mama who took on the big boys in Alaska and won. She is smart, attractive and brings actual governance experience to the campaign. And she’s a walking microcosm of the American family. With five kids – one pregnant, another serving in Iraq – she actually lives a life fraught with the same problems and confusion all families confront. She is a business woman, a sports enthusiast and a shrewd politician. Best of all, Palin shares basic American values centered on the rights of the individual.

I forgot – she ain’t bad-looking either.

That the left is having such a violent, visceral reaction to her candidacy is proof that they recognize the very strengths you point to and fear that an election they thought was a lock for their side is in fact going to be a serious contest. A disenfranchised and unenthusiastic base limping behind a less than ideologically inspiring candidate just got enfranchised and enthusiastic for the first time in the race. When conservatives bother to show up, liberals usually lose.

All very true, but as I posted on another article, the numbers mean something here. The typical feminists are out there saying “We are not going for John McCain’s trick” and women are not going to vote for the McCain/Palin ticket. Well, since 52% of the voters are women the question is how many of that total will swing toward the “You Go Girl” side. Only 10%, you say? Well that is 5% of the electorate. More than enough to swing any election.
