The idea perpetuated by unions, pols, etc., that everyone deserves a yearly raise is what got us into the current situation that we are in today globally. The only reason for a person's real purchasing power increase is productivity. One has to make, create, dig, etc., more widgets per hour than before. Any other reason for an increase in wages is the old shell game. We Americans have been duped into believing that we are special and deserve more. That idea has worked in the short run but we are now paying the piper. For examples see the steel industry, the rubber industry, the automotive industry, the television manufacturing industry, need I say more? The next huge problem our economy will have is the public workforce and their unions. This is volcano of epic proportions getting ready to explode. No politician can or will say no to them. Our economy is on the precipice of disaster.

"Regular inflation, in fact, can be a good thing since it suggests an ever growing economy where jobs are plentiful and goods and services abound. "

To me it suggests that politicians are unwilling to say no to the gimme more public. The vicious cycle of printing money creates inflation and keeps career pols in jobs that make them millionares, nay billionares by the time they retire at 78.

I wonder if Mr. Allrich can explain how the world is better off today than in 1964 when I put 25-cent gas in my new Mercury ($2100) so that I could drive from my $6,500 home to my $3.00/hr. job. True there were only four TV stations, but they were free and there were no wardrobe malfunctions.
