President Obama remains popular even as his policies are opposed by a majority of Americans.

A USA Today/Gallup Poll released Tuesday found that Americans are strongly opposed to shutting down the detention center at Guantanamo Bay and moving terrorism suspects to detention centers in the U.S by more than 2-1.

By more than 3-1, they oppose moving the detainees to prisons within the US, according to the poll.

Sixty-five percent of Americans polled said they do not support closing Guantanamo and sending its detainees to US prisons while just 32 percent said they did support the idea. 

The top Republican on the House Intelligence Committee said the results of a weekend USA Today/Gallup poll on closing Guantanamo Bay show that Americans oppose closing the prison and bringing terrorist detainees into the United States, including Michigan, as some state Democratic lawmakers recently suggested.

"Quite understandably, Americans do not want 240 of the world's most dangerous captured terrorists brought into their neighborhoods," said U.S. Rep. Pete Hoekstra (R-MI). "This is further proof that the American people agree that Guantanamo Bay remains the best and most practical solution to holding terrorist detainees captured on the battlefield," he said.

While conservatives believe the poll shows that the Democrat Party's position on terrorism is outside of the mainstream, most major news outlets have ignored the poll or given it scant coverage.

"Of course they'll ignore it. It doesn't fit in with their worldview. Had the poll revealed the opposite — that Americans wish Gitmo to be closed down immediately — the story would have made the front page of most newspapers or would have been the lead story on TV and radio news broadcasts," said former NYPD detective Ben Cardoza.

"The Obama and Democrat's plan to bring these terrorists and killers into the US to stand trial in civil courts tells me that these people know nothing about warfare or law enforcement. What are we supposed to do? Have crime scene units on the battlefields collecting evidence as they dodge bullets? Have investigators taking witness statements in the midst of a battle? Will JAG lawyers run around the battlefield taking depositions?" quips Det. Cardoza.

Rep. Hoekstra spoke out against closing Gitmo after a recent letter surfaced from a Michigan congressman inquiring about the possibility of keeping Guantanamo terrorists at a closed prison in the Upper Peninsula of the state.

"I have pledged since the President's announcement that I will vigorously fight any attempt to bring trained terrorists into Michigan, or anywhere else in the United States," Hoekstra said.

"For states like my home state of Michigan that are seeking new jobs and growth, opening what-in-effect would be an al-Qaeda prison in the state would seem like the worst option for attracting new businesses and residents. The American people have clearly reached the same conclusion."

Hoekstra, along with Republican Leader John Boehner (R-OH) and other ranking Republicans, introduced the Keep Terrorists Out of America Act, H. R. 2294, to affirm Congress' opposition to transferring or releasing terrorists held at the Guantanamo Bay prison into the United States.

The legislation would also prohibit the Administration from transferring or releasing any terrorist detainees at Guantanamo Bay to any state without express approval from the state's governor and legislature; and prohibit the President from transferring or releasing a terrorist detainee into the United States unless he provides notification and certification to Congress.
