Not only that, in four years people will either vote for him, or not, based on their opinion of the job he's done. They're not going to suddenly say, "don't vote for him. In 1971 he said the Lord's prayer with a bunch of yippies."

No, I should have said "some people even disapproved of soldiers who voluntarily served in Vietnam."
Just to amplify my point: P. J. O'Rourke, for example, was "anti-war and anti- capitalism" in 1970. If he were to run for office today, you couldn't make any of that stick to him, because he wouldn't have a "D" after his name.

While little Barack was attending this subversive Sunday school I was attending a Presbyterian church. But today I am agnostic. I attend church for funerals.
In the 1940's Ronald Reagan was an FDR/new deal supporter.
Go figure.
On the other hand, although you can make good political hay these days by depicting a democrat as having been a Vienam war opponent, my recollection is that by the time we left Vietnam the public was demanding it. In fact if the war had been popular, I believe Johnson would have run for a second term. I'm not saying this was a reason to shield army deserters (if that's what was done), I'm just saying the sentiment at that time was pretty anti-war.
Whereas in our modern era, it has been common to hear challenges to one another's patriotism, responses of righteous indignation, and the like, in the late 1960's to early 70's there was a pretty good sized group of Americans who would not have objected to being called "un-American." It was like a badge. Some people routinely put down the "establishment pigs." Some people even disapproved of soldiers who had complied with selective service and served in Vietnam. It was a strange and painful era.
If your case is that this news means that Obama can't be trusted, I offer two thoughts: (1) the people who will believe it already disliked him, and (2) the people who like him will not find your case very compelling.
But I could be wrong. To change an election, all you need is to tip the scales.
