Old Goat

You say

BTW, the Yankees have gotten younger, and the idea of rotating the DH is stupid.

Your idea of "lying with statistics" is conduct unbecoming on a site called The Intellectual Conservative.

The average age of all the players on the NYY roster now may, indeed, be lower than the average age of all the roster players on opening day 2009, but surely to my point, you do realize that:

Jeter (age = 36; Games in '09 = 153)
ARod (age = 35; games in 08 = 138 & 09 = 124)
Posada (age = 39: games in 09 = 111)

& now

Winn ( age = 36; games in 09 = 149)

(Ages as of sometime in 2010)

are not spring chickens?

Wanna bet that each of them plays in fewer games This Yr than Last?

And will Tex play 156 again?

History.

In 1950 Joe D (age 36) had a marvelous Sept & finished with a star year.

He was the opening day CF in 1951. How’d that season (his last) work for you?

Look it’s an opinion. I’m not an MD. Nor I suspect, are you.

But it’s not a stupid opinion & you’re a fugitive from the law of averages to coin a phrase.

Matsui was second in line of the Yankee priority list, Damon was first, as to retaining the older players. Matsui got an offer from the Angels and a promise of playing in the outfield, which probably won't happen. Matsui's agent gave the Yankees a chance to make an offer but they weren't ready to give up on Damon as their DH/OF player. The timing just wasn't right so Matsui signed with the Angels.

Damon probably wanted to remain with the Yankees, but didn't like the idea of a pay cut. Once they signed Johnson the role for Damon diminished.

I do think the signing of Winn was a poor move. Gardner isn't great for Left, but will probably move to center and Granderson to Left.

I think the trade for Granderson was a good move. The trade for Javy not so much. Granted he generally stays healthy, but his better pitching has been in the National league, and that doesn't translate well to the American League, let alone the East.

Gardner or Winn in left is very weak, and they would have been better with Damon.

BTW, the Yankees have gotten younger, and the idea of rotating the DH is stupid. How many games would Posada, Jeter, ARod and Teixeira really need at DH?

I don't see the starting lineup with Gardner or Winn being the one they finish the year with. Their bench is almost non-existent as well. And because of the number of good trading pieces they gave up already this year, making a trade before the deadline will only further weaken the farm system.

This is a case where having Hal instead of George running the team has possibly cost the team a repeat.

I think that the NYY have too many aging guys who could use some rest through a day here & there as a DH & so I don’t think they need a full-time DH. I think that Nick Johnson will get some playing time at 1st Base to rest Tex & maybe in the OF. Or maybe they’ll sign Damon at $5MM & trade Johnson & pick up most of his salary. Or maybe I’m pontificating without knowing what I’m talking about!

Matsui was damaged goods, but Damon has some value. I think that Damon just out priced his services. MY guess: he’ll probably wind up as Abreu did (with (supposedly) a $5MM contract in L.A.), playing for a would-be competitor not as free-spending as the NYY.
