Now that McCain has won the Republican Senate primary in Arizona, he should be focusing on the upcoming general election and his Democrat opponent. Instead, his campaign is continuing to smear Hayworth to his friends in the liberal media, who eagerly print every word.
Arizona Republic writer Dan Nowicki penned, "Hayworth did not call McCain to concede the race, a McCain campaign source said." Politico, which has been in the tank for McCain during the entire race, followed up with an article entitled, "McCain still waiting on Hayworth call." In it, they quoted an anonymous McCain staffer who said, "Note Hayworth basically did the same thing when Harry Mitchell beat him in 2006. J.D. has less class than the Salahis." The article supposedly went to print before talking to Hayworth about it to get his side of the story.
Politico took another jab at JD a couple of days later, no doubt urged by McCain and his Mafia, reporting that Hayworth was absent from an Arizona Congressional fundraising Unity dinner featuring both victorious and losing candidates. Another unnamed source was quoted saying that Senator Jon Kyl had invited Hayworth, but Hayworth declined.
The truth?
Hayworth did not have McCain's personal phone number on election night. McCain jumped ahead and gave his victory speech very early, while Hayworth was still getting dressed and cleaned up for his concession speech. Hayworth conceded publicly. Only twice in his life has Hayworth ever received concession speeches from opponents – and Hayworth ran successfully for office six times. The McCain Mafia and their enablers in the liberal media would have you believe it's a rare occurrence when a losing candidate fails to call the winning candidate.
When Hayworth lost to Harry Mitchell in 2006, he did attempt to concede. He called Mitchell, left a voicemail, and scheduled him to stop by his office for the concession. Mitchell's staff subsequently canceled. Hayworth also congratulated Mitchell when he attended the Congressional Members Weekly Prayer Breakfast with other freshmen Democrats. Hayworth gave him his phone number and told him he would be moving into the Rayburn Building in his old spot because of the delay in making the election results official.
Only by stretching the truth could it be construed that Hayworth did not concede to Mitchell. The unnamed McCain staffer who made the accusation was probably Brian Rogers, McCain's spokesperson who used to work for Al Gore as his climate change research director. It is not surprising that Rogers would have more loyalty to Mitchell than Hayworth considering his liberal background.
Hayworth never received an invitation to the Unity Dinner, much less one from Senator Kyl that he allegedly turned down. Perhaps he received a generic invitation in email or regular mail like all Republicans received, requesting money, that was overlooked. But there was no personal real invitation to the event.
It is telling that all of the sources cited in these articles are anonymous. Was it too risky the truth might come out, making the McCain Mafia look bad? Their true character has been revealed by these smear articles that keep coming. They should be focusing on winning the general election, but they are so petty they would rather waste time and resources beating a guy when he is down. They are going after Hayworth harder than the actual opponent in the race now, Democrat Rodney Glassman. Money contributed to McCain is still being used to attack Hayworth, who is no longer in the race, instead of McCain's opponent. McCain has not changed.
