Somalia is the world's worst humanitarian crisis. It is not the drought that is killing thousands of people in Somalia, but the al-Qaeda affiliate al-Shabab. Eliminate militant Islam, and a lot of the rest of the world's problems will go away. [...] Margaret Thatcher, Jeanne Kirkpatrick, and many ordinary grandmothers are emblematic of this new self-confidence; we regard an older woman who is excessively vain or petulant as having missed this full maturity. [...] The police will knock down your door and arrest you for a minor old violation of the law, but they won't dare arrest an illegal immigrant who flagrantly testifies before the legislature and holds press conferences. Shouting "racist" ended the debate and sent the opposition scurrying for cover, despite the accusation being entirely unfounded. [...] So, much of the current nonsense of pre-hurricane overkill must be attributed to Katrina syndrome: the idea that more government can save lives and property, when in actuality, less bureaucratic interference and more individual responsibility would suffice. [...] The Washington elite, along with their media minions, may have reason to despise Perry, and may rant endlessly about what they claim to be his deficiencies.
