The Blind Leading the Blind
by J. Grant Swank, Jr., Pastor
3 April 2003

In a recent interview with Al-Jazeera, UN Secretary General Kofi Annan had this to say about the US war effort: "I have always said that war is a human catastrophe and everyone will emerge a loser. I am pained by all that has happened."

Tell me what’s wrong with this picture? Come on now. Lean in. Heads up. Brains a-perking. Get ready, set, go.

UN Secretary General Kofi Annan talks with whom? Guess again. You got it. He’s yapping to none other than the Qatar-based AL-JAZEERA satellite TV in . . .guess what? An interview. Arnett replay. God help us!

Anyhow, get ready, set, go. What’s wrong with this picture?

"If you are asking me whether I see any immediate possibility of a cease-fire, I do not see that," Annan states on Tuesday, April 2, according to Reuters.

"I wish we could say that there is such a possibility for an immediate halt and that a call by the Security Council could lead to that, but I don't see the matter that way."

Ah-hem. How’d the UN Security Council wedge into this?

"I have always said that war is a human catastrophe and everyone will emerge a loser. I am pained by all that has happened."

". . .everyone will emerge a loser." You heard it from the esteemed leader mouthpiece of the United Nations! ". . .everyone will emerge a loser."

"As soon as the circumstances change, the United Nations will return and work with the Iraqi authorities and people who are responsible for their land."

Ah-hem. Powell, did you hear them cookies? Rumsfeld? United States President George W. Bush? Did you hear that? ". . .the United Nations will return and work with the Iraqi authorities. . ."

Not on your banana, Annan. Not on your banana. Not.

You, Annan, put nothing but calculated mayhem into this "Iraqi Freedom," so you get nothing but nothing out of a win war. Got it? Got it. In other words, arrange your paperclips atop your UN desktop for that’s exactly what you did to contribute to the ". . .everyone. . .a loser."

Mr. Annan, listen up:

The Iraqi captive citizens who have known for twenty plus years utter brutality will emerge winners.

The fathers who have had to blow themselves up suicide-like in order to keep their children from being shot in the head will at least emerge their children the winners.

The women who have been unjustly accused as prostitutes so as to have their heads severed from their shoulders will at least emerge having their households henceforth never living with such abuse against females.

The whole nation viced in by unbelievable fear 24 / 7 will emerge breathing free air, speaking their own minds, publishing their own free press and going about their village chores with no fear of secret police swabbing up history’s floor with their disappearing bodies. In other words, a whole nation of winners.

The entire world will emerge winners in that the despots of this planet will be forced to recognize that United States President George W. Bush and Team have given fair warning that such dictatorial madness will not be tolerated. Democracy is the high road. Even at this hour Turkey is establishing its own fresh democracy under new political leadership. Winners.

The United States populace who stood by a principled President will emerge shouting victory, tears of joy streaming down their cheeks, applauding the heavens above for daily strength and wisdom in dealing with not only Hussein but France and Russia and Germany and a listless, cowardly United Nations — led by blind Annan. Patriotic Americans: Winners.

The coalition families who will have lost their precious children in this war will emerge knowing that they have seen their sons and daughters offer the supreme sacrifice — laying down their lives for their Iraqi friends. Winners.

It is extremely sad, Mr. Annan, that you are so terribly blind. Further, that in your limp "leadership" you have led astray other blind. Moreover, you have encouraged those within our own borders — Hillary, Daschle, and Company — to lose sight of democracy’s high road mission — freedom!

Even this Tuesday, you have so dug out your eyes that you cannot begin to see the glimpses of sunlight overhead. Wish to God believing patriots could save you from your plight; but to each his own, Annan. To each his own.
