The Hypocritical White Sports Media
by Chris Tremoglie
16 October 2003

Funny how the sports media never crusades to make itself more diverse.

An ancient maxim advises, "Physician heal thyself."

The sports media should heed this advice - especially in Philadelphia. The invective directed towards Rush Limbaugh for an intemperate comment about Donovan McNabb has revealed a problem with the sports media. It is lily white.

These are the same sports media personalities who Limbaugh criticized for crediting McNabb simply because he is black. Limbaugh said that the media is on a crusade to promote more black quarterbacks and black coaches. He may be correct about that and if he is - so what. Maybe the media should be crusading for that - it is a noble pursuit.

The problem is not that the media is crusading for black quarterbacks, black coaches and more black owners. The problem is the media is crusading for more blacks in everything except the sports media.

The media has gone all self-righteous on the issue and focused on one part of the quote. But why would the media do this? Is it because they hate Rush Limbaugh? Yes and to answer why they do would require a novel not an article?

In a country where one is innocent until proven guilty, one would need more evidence than this to deem Limbaugh a racist. The controversy stirs from a white man making a negative comment about a black man. Keep in mind no one acknowledged that Limbaugh, advocated the cause of hiring more black coaches- that fact has been totally ignored.

The Philadelphia media was one the first to unleash the attack on Rush Limbaugh. They excoriated Limbaugh for saying: ""I don't think he's been that good from the get-go. ... I think what we've had here is a little social concern in the NFL. The media has been very desirous that a black quarterback do well. There is a little hope invested in McNabb, and he got a lot of credit for the performance of this team that he didn't deserve. The defense carried this team."

Somehow, someway, the media successfully managed to turn this bold quote into a racist declaration. But what is truly racist about the statement? And who is racist? Let's examine the Philadelphia media that bastion of civil rights concern.

Philadelphia's ABC affiliate WPVI - TV has four sportscasters. Three are white, only one is black

The NBC affiliate has three sportscasters. None of them are black.

Only the CBS affiliate, KYW-TV, has a proportionate number of black sportscasters. Two of their five are black.

The print media have been near KKK like when it comes to sportswriters. The Philadelphia Inquirer, the largest paper in Philadelphia and the state, not to mention one of the most liberal, has ten sports writers and only two are black. The Philadelphia Daily News, the second largest in the city, have nine white sportswriters and only one black Now remember this is in a city that has nearly 4 of 10 black citizens.

Nationwide newspapers are no different. The bastion of affirmative action, the New York Times has 7 white sportswriters and only 1 black. The New York Post is 5 white and 1 black.

Tom Arnold who made some cruel jokes about Limbaugh during his October 1 telecast of The Best Damned Sports Show is the host of a show that is two thirds white. Yo, Tom you should change the name to "The Best Damned White Sports Show."

In championing the cause of Donovan McNabb, should they not be concerned about the apartheid that lies within their own profession? Should they not address the issue of racial inequality in their own ranks before excoriating Limbaugh?

Didn't Eagles owner ? Lurie mention something about institutional racism?

Sports media report about thyself.
