Are grassroots conservative Republicans really willing to abandon everything they ever believed in and every conservative principle they ever supported for the illusory hope of a soulless victory? [...] If Lopez Obrador prevails in Mexico's presidential election, it would herald the most important victory for the Left in Latin America since the election of Hugo Chavez. [...] The occupation of Iraq, it seems, violates every tenet of the Reagan-Weinburger-Powell Doctrine of just wars which hold that America only fights when it has to either in defense of its own national security or to help defend another nation unjustly attacked. The main problem with the various plans to win the war is that they focus on bringing democracy to Iraq as an end in itself, which does nothing to further US national security interests in the region or further our prospects for victory. President Bush has done what even his conservative doubters like myself failed to predict — he has moved the Supreme Court to the left.
