Economist Ian Fletcher says that the country’s insistence on free trade has become a paralyzing crisis for the country. It is making us hostage to a centuries-old ideology that really was developed for the interests of the mother land of the British Empire. Fletcher also demolishes many of the comforting myths of free trade.
[...] I’m fairly sympathetic with Santorum’s overall mentality on economics. It’s when I look at his detailed proposals that I start to get worried. The naive young Occupiers should not indebt future generations as was done to our generations. [...] 37% have a negative reaction when they hear the word "capitalism." Stop using it. [...] It’s time to start getting honest about a very simple fact: Nobody, but nobody, really believes in free markets. That’s right. Not the Republican Party, not the libertarians, not the Wall Street Journal, nobody. [...] It is one of the paradoxes of our epoch that the same hand engineered the policies that led to vibrant economic growth both in America and in China. [...] In slurring supporters of gold as “lunatics and hacks,” Roubini falls into lockstep with other leading defenders of the status quo. [...] The public has been brainwashed into thinking trade and free trade are the same thing. The game is rigged, folks. [...] You can depend on POTUS to destroy jobs, decrease security, and upset good neighbors just to score political points. [...] If allowed to press forward with his agenda, Barack Obama will ensure that as Europe goes, so goes America. [...] Romney is threatening to set up an “authentic free traders club” of nations and keep China out of it. Let's hope if he is elected president and China calls his bluff that he sticks to it. [...] |
