Schilling’s Exile from ESPN Symptomatic of PC Media’s War on Truth

Noviana Malewa after “Month of Peace”

Remarking inconvenient truths about radical Islam can ruin your career–but not doing so will ruin lives.

IC readers are not rabid baseball fans, on the whole: after my last post, I can infer that much. But what follows has nothing whatever to do with the game, any more than the persecution of bakers who decline to service gay weddings has to do with how to beat an egg. At issue is more, even, than our First Amendment rights. It’s not just the freedom to speak truth (or utter garbage) that’s at stake: it’s the freedom to be excused from tacit assent to monstrous lies—the freedom to live without fear of unemployment, lawsuit, or perhaps imprisonment if one does not bow quietly to stupid canards and destructive disinformation.

Last week former Boston Red Sox pitching star and current ESPN commentator Curt Schilling posted a tweet that read as follows; “It’s said only 5-10% of Muslims are extremists. In 1940, only 7% of Germans were Nazis. How’d that go?” Schilling added later, “The math is staggering when you get to true #’s.”

The sports mega-network’s response? “Curt’s tweet was completely unacceptable, and in no way represents our company’s perspective. We made that point very strongly to Curt and have removed him from his current Little League [World Series] assignment pending further consideration.” In deference to the looming “consideration” of ESPN’s Star Chamber, no doubt, Schilling clad himself in the Internet equivalent of sackcloth and penitentially fell to his knees. Though he had almost instantly withdrawn the tweet when howls of offended cultural sensibility began to resound, he soon followed up with a tweeted prayer that the ESPN patriarchy flail him as he deserved. “I understand and accept my suspension. 100% my fault. Bad choices have bad consequences and this was a bad decision in every way on my part.”

I’m a Schilling fan, and I was deeply disappointed to see that he had surrendered so quickly and abjectly. I should have thought that someone in his position might have saved up enough dough to tender his resignation and look for a better job… but then, he probably knew that Major League Baseball would also—behind closed doors and without a public word—ban him from future employment and airbrush him from its precious history.

Just look at what NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell, bosom pal of Rahm Emanuel, has done to Tom Brady, the Superbowl quarterback who declined to show up for ritual handshakes with Barack Obama.

The long knives are out in ALL of our media for anyone who sins against the gospel of Political Correctness. Schilling, I should imagine, has had a gutful of ESPN—but that doesn’t mean that he’s prepared to give up baseball and sell used cars. He’s between a rock and a hard place.

Now, Curt’s claim about the dangers of Islamic radicalism has been called into question by no one, as far as I know. (Personally, I find the 10% upper limit he cited amazingly low: it certainly isn’t accurate for specific parts of the Muslim world.) The “outrage”, then, is that Schilling was a responsible enough citizen and adult to warn us that the critical mass of fanatics for moving a population to commit genocide need not approach 50%, or even 30%. For conscientiously sounding the alarm, he now faces permanent exile from his livelihood.

For the rest of this post, I should like to share just a fraction of a long, long article by Michael Mannheimer that I found in German and have attempted to translate. Read this and tell me that we don’t need to have a serious public discussion about Islamic practice and participation in the modern world.

Mannheimer’s point of departure for the piece is the mercilessly recycled, never substantiated claim that Ramadan is a festival of peace.

The relevant reference here is the so-called “Sword Verse“ (Surat at-Tauba): in it, believing Muslims find what Allah expects of them when Ramadan has ended:

Koran, Sura 9:5

“And when the holy months have passed, then kill the idolators wherever you find them, and seize them and lie in wait for them and ambush them in every place… Truly, Allah is the All-Forgiving, the Merciful.” (cited by the website of the Saudi Arabian Ministry for Affairs, Institutions, Councils, and Proclamations Regarding Islam)

The holy months are Ramadan, when Muslims reflect upon their adherence to the first revelation of the Koran which Allah supposedly entrusted to the Prophet Mohammed.

And the idolators are us. In short, the world minus Islam—some 5.7 billion people. All of us should be killed, and should indeed be so by direct command of the Allmighty, the All-Forgiving, the All-Merciful: by order of the god of Islam, Allah. “Kill the idolators wherever you find them.”

A particular one of the over two hundred death-verses [in the Koran] addresses the hesitant and the vacillating among the Muslim masses who, for reasons of conscience or simply in common humanity and/or a deficient hatred for “unbelievers”, do not want to commit literal murder. This verse makes clear even to the most reluctant Muslim that he should kill without a second thought—for it absolves the reluctant of any personal responsibility for their deeds: “Not you, but Allah, will have cut them down. Not you, but Allah, will have fired the shaft through which He confers upon believers a generous grace from Himself.”  (Sura 8:17)

This is nothing other than a religious variant of the so-called “duty to obey orders” (Befehlsnotstandes) to which, from the earliest historical times until the present, human monsters have appealed. Even so did nearly all the primary defendants before the Nürnberg War Crimes tribunal appeal to the “duty to obey orders” under Hitler; and even so did the Cambodian Comrade Duch—commandant of the notorious prison-cum-slaughterhouse Tuol Sleng (“S21“) in Phnom Penh from 1975 to 1979, where six inmates out of 20,000 survived the tortures, appeal to his day’s interpretation of the “duty to obey orders”—his sole defense against his accusers in the war crimes trials begun this year [2009] in Phnom Penh.

The Nazi criminals deferred to their orders from Hitler, the Khymer Rouge butcher Duch to his orders from Pol Pot—and Muslim murderers pass the buck to explicit orders received from their Allah 1400 years ago. This is a banal commonality among all mass murderers: all of them say in one voice that without a command from on high, they would not have committed their atrocity.

….

It must be at once granted that, from a worldwide perspective, no other ideology has so quickly and consequentially spread as has Islam. No wonder: it prevailed by means of deception, falsehood, and ambush as well as open and structured terror. This is no duplicitous claim of lying Islam-bashers: this is standard operating procedure against the Dar al-Harb—the “House of War”, as Islam designates all territories not yet brought under its control. Let us listen to what Khameini, the supreme spiritual guide of the Shiites, has to say to his faithful on the subject:

“Christians and Jews say, You should not kill! But we say that when it is necessary, killing is similar to a prayer. Deception, entrapment, perjury, lying, theft, and murder are all the tools of Allah!” (from a summary published by Mohammed Nawab-Safavi in “Dschame’eh va Hokumat Islami“ Teheran 1985, 2. Ausg. S. 63. In German cited as “Morden für Allah“ by Amir Taheri, München 1993, Droemersche, S. 56)

….

It happened on October 29, 2005, a few days before the Sugar Festival [the End of the Fast celebration], a festive occasion that marks the termination of Ramadan. Four teenaged girls—Theresia Morangke (15), Yarni Sambue (15), Alfita Poliwo (17), and Noviana Malewa (15)—were on the way to their Christian private school in Poso, a small settlement near Sulawesi, Indonesia. Sadly for them, it was Ramadan.

To honor the holiday, several Muslims of the same district had the notion, occasioned by Idul Fitri (as the Sugar Festival is called there), of making a very special offering to their religion. For Ramadan, they wished to “offer” to their religion the heads of unbelievers as proof of their love for Allah and His Prophet, as the 24-year-old Muslim Hasanuddin, one of the captured perpetrators, later testified. As is appropriate in true believers, they took the Sura of the Koran literally. That was how they had been taught by their imams since childhood. They must certainly have been very familiar with the “Sword Verse”. Their god plainly demanded them as good Muslims to kill idolators wherever they found them. These Muslims were therefore in search of “idolators”, and they found them on a cocoa plantation.

If you can’t figure out what happened next, then you’re not hearing the message. Young Noviana Malewa managed to escape the onslaught of machetes with her face almost cut in two, and somehow hid out for hours as the assailants sought her. Christian missionaries have stitched her back together as well as the miracles of modern medicine allow: she retains nerve damage and pain that will accompany her through the rest of her time on this earth.

Her companions, though their exit from our world was perhaps mercifully quick, suffered the indignity of having their heads displayed all about the town.

Indonesia is rightly known as a moderate Muslim nation. Mannheimer continues his long chronicle by detailing some of the atrocities committed on European soil by her new “citizens” just after the “month of peace”. Of course, the press has either left these incidents entirely unreported or has represented them as the ire of nameless unemployed youth blowing off steam.

As with Schilling’s tweet, a distinctly Muslim problem must never be characterized with the “m” word. A few, or perhaps many, Muslims might be offended.

Would you dismiss your doctor if he dared to tell you that you had cancer, and instead go in search of a quack who would give you a clean bill of health? If the basic facts cannot be contested in these cases, then how are Muslims of good will well served by our staying mum about passages in their holy book that extol cold-blooded killing? A murderous passage exists in the Bible: Deuteronomy 21:18-23. How many preachers of a Sunday exhort their congregation to go forth and stone stubborn sons? If the Christian community can agree that such passages are best left ignored, why cannot the Muslim community be brought to see that its dozens (or hundreds) of “slaughter-verses” need to be placed in moth balls if their god is to remain worthy of honor and compatible with love?

But how will such pressure be applied when Western intellectuals, egotistically enamored of their tolerant pose, refuse to deplore atrocity-inciting words for what they are? How will the gentle Muslim stand up against his faith’s diabolical 10% when his daughters might be beheaded on their way to school as the Western judicial machine sits idling on its low-octane political fuel?

When an Egyptian-born cabbie murdered his own two daughters in Lewisville, Texas, back in 2008, I had a student in class who had known one of the girls. She would have entered college that year—and she just couldn’t wait to get away from home. She had told my student often that she thought her father would probably kill her one day.

Question to ESPN: what are you doing to help the spiritual sisters of that girl, or of Noviana Malewa or her Christian classmates? You know that your audience’s demographic has little to no representation among Muslims (or, for that matter, among the gay-marriage mafia): obviously, your position isn’t a calculated bid for ratings, but rather a “principled” stance on behalf of suppressing the truth and pretending that dangerous realities don’t exist. Are you aware that your “principles” are costing people their lives?

I hope for your sake, executives at ESPN, that you see the permanently scarred face of Noviana Malewa and hear the fading voice of Sarah Said—making a 911 call as she bleeds to death—every time you try to sleep. I hope for your sake that you are so tormented by such images that you banish fantasy from your lives one day and hug the truth to your weary souls. God is merciful.
