    JMB (all face Ogden and genuflect) named the cartridge the .45 AP (Auto Pistol). It was re-christened as the .45 ACP (Auto Colt Pistol) when Colt sent cartridge specs to several different prospective ammunition manufacturers and asked them to submit samples. The winner among them — the Union Metallic Cartridge company — used the head stamp “.45 ACP,” and the designation used on UMC’s headstamp was the one that stuck.
